The Data Game — all episodes

It’s the world’s first, the world’s best… almost certainly the world’s only data gameshow.

(There’s probably a reason for that.)

I’ve been lucky enough to present four episodes of The Data Game for the Open Data Institute (two of them at ODI Summits, one at the Turing’s AI:UK conference, and one for London Data Week).

For the uninitiated (lucky you), we somehow convince two data experts to subject themselves to:

  • a multiple choice round on public polling about data and AI
  • sixty seconds of having to sustain a ‘data is the new x’ metaphor they’ve not previously seen, and
  • an assortment of other rounds mainly shamelessly ripped off from classic game shows
  • my sparkly gold jacket.

The first one came about thanks to a government reshuffle shaking up plans for a Summit keynote. Rather than scrabbling around for a replacement speaker, then-head of policy Milly Zimeta asked me if I’d like to host a gameshow all about data instead. The rest is history (though not quite as lucrative as the podcast of that name).

We wanted it to be entertaining but also make people think or even learn something as well. You can judge whether we’ve succeeded on either count…

I’ve collected all the episodes together in one place for ease of linking to them.

Episode 1: ODI Summit 2021

  • Contestants: Bilal Mateen (Wellcome Trust), Claire Melamed (Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data)

Episode 2: Turing AI:UK 2022

  • Contestants: Nora Ni Loideain (Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London), Milly Zimeta (ODI)
  • Assistant host: Natalie Zelenka (University of Bristol)

Episode 3: ODI Summit 2022

  • Contestants: Andy Dudfield (Full Fact), Kirsty Innes (Tony Blair Institute)

Episode 4: London Data Week 2024

  • Contestants: Miranda Sharp (Metis Digital), Stefan Webb (TPX Impact)
